5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Speakers Built Like a Tank, July 12, 2011
This review is from: Bose 301 Series IV - Speaker - 75 Watt - 3-way (Electronics)
I've owned a second pair of these since 1996, replacing my first set of 301's which I bought in 1974...gave the originals to a friend in exhange for an amplifier. I know there are a ton of bookshelf speakers out there to choose from, some very high end, but there's just something about these speakers that have kept me hooked for the past 37 years. There is something to said for the enduring, reflective sound aspects that the 301's are famous for. The 2 angled tweeters really project sound all over my house with amazing clarity. It's especially good with classical, jazz, or electronic space music. Flutes, pianos, violins just sing with stunning clarity. The 8" woofers provide more than adequate bass, especially fretless. Of course, I use them with the home theater aspect as well. A good, and very generous friend of mine recently upgraded his own system with top of the line audiophile equipment and gave me his 8 year old Harmom-Kardon AVR 8000 receiver, which is a monster in it's... 5.0 out of 5 stars great speaker for home theater and moderate volume music., November 19, 2009
This review is from: Bose 301 Series IV - Speaker - 75 Watt - 3-way (Electronics)
I've had these speakers since 1999 with three different receivers, and they've never disappointed me when used as what they're designed for. Bose is not typically designed for loudspeaker applications. If you want a loudspeaker primarily for music, then this isn't the ideal speaker for you. They are great home theater main or surround speakers. They sound great with good full range. They're not designed to sound like an integrated subwoofer, but they handle bass well for a 4 1/2" cone. When these finally give out, I'll upgrade to the newest series of 301s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality speakers at a budget price., October 14, 2002
This review is from: Bose 301 Series IV - Speaker - 75 Watt - 3-way (Electronics)
I have owned a pair of Bose 301 speakers for 15 years. They still sound great! They are hooked to a Yamaha A/V receiver that is conservatively rated at 85 watts per channel. I would recommend these speakers to anyone wanting a good pair of speakers without spending a lot of money for them. You can shop around and pay more for speakers, but why waste your time and money. The Bose 301 speakers are durable, sound great, look good and best yet, won't bust your budget. I would recommend these speakers to almost everyone looking for a pair!

3.0 out of 5 stars wonderful sound, but....., October 6, 2011
This review is from: Lifestyle SA-3 amplifier (Electronics)
I have 2 SA3 amplifiers that drive outdoor speakers at a weekend getaway(cabin) property. We have many wonderful memories of unbelievable music in front of an outdoor fire listening to our Bose lifestyle system. In the last 6 years, I have had to replace 2 different units. Thankfully, Bose support is 2nd to none and they will get you a replacement at a refurbished cost of around $70.00 if I remember. Besides the Lifestyle system and the remote amps being a little finicky, my ONLY beef is the connector. It is not a traditional speaker wire connector and if you use thick wire to drive the power, good luck. Unfortunately, you will need a flat eyeglass screwdriver and a set of eyes younger than 50. I will be replacing my second SA3 with Bose support soon. We can't say enough about the sound quality, but sure wish they would be less problematic. If I ever build another house, I would consider using this same system if they would only fix the speaker connectors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Acoustic Research AP1650 - Very good speaker wire!, February 27, 2004

This review is from: Acoustic Research AP1650 Speaker Cable, 16 AWG, OFC, (50 feet) (Electronics)
Several recent upgrades and additions to two different home theater systems necessitated several new audio and video cables and speaker wire. The addition of a Bose Acoustimass 10 Home Theater System which of course has its own speakers wires and a Sony receiver with the option of surround back speakers necessitated some additional speaker wire to use with an older pair of Bose 301 Series III speakers.

When it comes to quality in speaker wire I find the subject to be somewhat perplexing. To me, as long as the speaker wire clearly identifies the positive and negative cables and the sound comes from the speakers, its good speaker wire, leaving the quality aspect to the receiver and speakers that it's hooked up to. Obviously, to me, when it comes to purchasing speaker wire, you can do one of two things; spend an extraordinary amount of money or a reasonable amount of money depending on the name of the manufacturer.

Since attaching Acoustic Research's AP1650 speaker wire to my Bose... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice HTIB with a couple of problems, October 21, 2007
This review is from: Denon S302 DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
Listed below are my thoughts on the S-302 after a week of use.

Styling
The styling is fair. This is very subjective, but the cabinet does not really look like it should cost $1700. I very much like the compact size. The controls look fine and feel solid.

Sound
I am not an audiophile, so take this with a grain of salt. I believe the quality of the sound is very good when playing music. The bass was not too deep and the highs were very clear. There was a good separation of instruments on some the jazz recordings. I tested this with various types of music using sources from CD, FM, and MP3 (VBR 165-175 kbps).

DVD
This is a 2.1 system and to me that is what it sounds like. Watching several movies, I never had the illusion of 5.1. The sound is fine, the sub-woofer did a bit too much shaking of the apartment for my tastes, but this is easily adjustable with a dedicated button on the remote. Occasionally the voices did... 4.0 out of 5 stars Excellant sound from 2.1, Difficult WiFi setup, May 22, 2009

volvotech (Not the Motor City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Denon S302 DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
I Choose this 2.1 system for features and ease of set up. DVD Quality is excellant, fills entire room with sound. CD/music audio is good, but wont blow the windows out of the house which I didnt expect. WiFi Internet radio took about 3 days to figure out. Denon does not support uPnP with netgear routers. I eventually found this out on their website. Internet radio has 7K+ stations with no commercials. No support for Pandora though. Good funtions with Wii video games thru component cables, no lag, It has a rock arena sound setting which is good for rock band. Wife and 5yr old can operate system. This may be an overpriced system, but I am hopeing it makes up for it with longevity.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing but trouble, December 10, 2009
This review is from: Denon S302 DVD Home Theater System (Electronics)
I bought the S302 in June of 08, and have had WAY too many problems with it. First, after about four months of use the system started to freeze up for no apparent reason. The only way to get it to work again was to unplug it for a while. I took it in for repairs (under warranty), and they kept it for three weeks. When I got it back I noticed a crackle in the subwoofer, so back to the shop it went. They kept it for four MORE weeks. Now, just a little over four months out of warrnty, the subwoofer has crapped out and needs replacement.

The design is pretty, and the sound is okay (for what it is), but the quality leaves MUCH to be desired. I'm back to using my 20+ year-old Onkyo system. Bottom line: there's a lot of competition out there for your stereo/home theater money, so leave the Denons in the store.
